Since entering office rappers have had a field day with Donald Trump, and this time it’s Snoop Dogg taking a swing at the POTUS.
In promotion of his forthcoming EP Make America Crip Again, Snoop Dogg released the lead single and title cut, taking a direct jab at Donald Trump’s campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again.’
The Ben Billions-produced beat features a sample from Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick‘s “La Di Da Di,” and has Snoop revisiting his roots with the Crips street gang. Lyrically it is both poignant and controversial, addressing everything from black on black violence and the economic divide to corruption.
Snoop storms out the gate saying, “The President wants to make the world great again. Fuck that shit, we’re going to make America Crip again.”
Meanwhile a laconic beat has Snoop taking his time, making sure that every critique is given a proper stage to shine. He gives a nod to Ice Cube‘s Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, and believes that the nation needs to return back to its heyday: [LISTEN]
This still America with 3 K’s believe that shit
The world is yours my nigga, so go and see that bitch
Every chance you get, hit that lick and get that shit
Put your name down, and your thing down, we’re going to make America Crip again
“It’s not a statement or a political act: it’s just good music,” the rapper said in a statement. “Certain people feel like we should make America ‘great again,’ but that time they’re referring to always takes me back to separation and segregation so I’d rather make America Crip again.”
Snoop also made it a point to clarify who and what the Crips represented at the time saying, “In my lifetime, that’s when young black men in impoverished areas organized to help their communities and to take care of their own because society basically left them for dead.”
“A lot of people glorify the gang-banging and violence but forget that in the beginning, the Crip’s main and sole purpose was to be the reflection of the Black Panthers. They looked after kids, provided after-school activities, fed them and stepped in as role models and father figures.”
Make America Crip Again is set to be released on October 27th. Listen to the track below:
