A Malaysian cosmetic diva has a message for ‘you’ (about herself), Linkin Park put together a heartfelt fan-made video of one of Chester Bennington‘s most tender and subdued tracks, some Spanish metal heads pay homage to Lemmy and Motörhead and more, on the 40th week of the Best Lyric Videos of the Year.
Dato Seri Vida – ‘I Am Me‘
Malaysian cosmetic “queen” (this is what she calls herself) is a polarizing figure over in Southeast. Some applaud the entrepreneur for her rags-to-riches story, building a cosmetic line (Vida Beauty Sdn Bhd) from virtually nothing, others chide her for flaunting her success by bathing in bathtubs full of money and riding around in fuchsia lambos. The song is horrid talk-sing faux club trash, but hey, if you’re gonna flaunt your success, here’s one entertaining way to brand it — getting another internet bump since its July release via an official launch party this past Wed featuring a diamond encrusted cake:
Linkin Park – ‘One More Light‘
It’s been a little over two months since Linkin Park’s frontman, Chester Bennington, took his own life, of which fans are still coping with. This single, the title track from the band’s 7th LP, One More Light, is one of the band’s and Bennington’s most tender and subdued. Essentially a cappella save for a glistening guitar riff on perpetual fade, the band put together a fan-made video of a bunch of beautiful fans patch-working together lyrics from the song’s hopeful narrative that humanizes the posthumous cathartics perfectly:
Blitzen Trapper – ‘Wild and Reckless‘
Not a lot of bells on whistles on this Laurel Canyon-shade of pop rock from the Portland quintet — just a still image of a bright moon on fade and some palm trees in contrast with a crumbling building. Consider the metaphors of this — if any— as you wish, but we’re more interested in why only like one-tenth of the lyrics make an appearance. Either way, the simplicity is refreshing:
Holycide – ‘Motörhead‘
Some Spanish metal heads are paying homage to Lemmy and the Motörhead crew in the best way, should you be a fan of comic art and the tenacity to live your life the way the guitar god did like no other. It’s a select few that can fend off the havoc such a lifestyle can do to a body, but a comic book anti-hero depiction is certainly a fair way to go about honoring the dude:
Chris Thile – ‘Thank You, New York‘
A rather flaccid song from an otherwise talented dude, Chris Thile finds some downtime with his new gig with A Prairie Home Companion to record some songs…that he originally debuted on A Prairie Home Companion. Laced with shots of off-hour NYC at its most sleepiest, though, it redeems itself — if you’re into that whole redemptive, country-tinged Disney sonic arch — with a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the creative powers of the city that otherwise doesn’t sleep, with a lyric creative direction that feels like neon lights coming to life:
