The Killers‘ most recent song rose up from the ashes of a difficult childhood — the childhood of frontman Brandon Flowers‘ wife, Tana.
“Some Kind of Love” from the band’s forthcoming fifth studio album, Wonderful Wonderful (September 22), is an ambient song that samples Brian Eno‘s “An Ending” from his 1983 album, Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, according to a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
The song was inspired by Tana’s struggle with complex PTSD, which came about from childhood trauma. Flowers wrote the song to encourage her.
“Typically, for women who have had problems in their youth, it really manifests itself when they’re in their 30s,” he said. “Over the last few years, it has become a big part of our life. Some of the things I’ve tackled on this record are because of that, and ‘Some Kind of Love’ is one of those songs.”
But he’d always make sure to play and explain the songs to Tana first.
“She’s given me the OK,” Flowers said. “I’d never done anything like that before, where we’d sit down and play the songs for her, and explain it, and see if it made sense to her, and got her approval.”
And this new track is extra special — Brandon and Tana’s kids are singing on it.
“That one’s real emotional, because she’s been as low as a person can get,” he said. “The end of the song is me and my boys singing…”
They sing:
I can’t do this alone
We need you at home
There’s so much to see
And we know that you’re strong
“It’s really emotional,” he said. “I played that for her, and she just sobbed. But I’m proud of that one.”
The songs on the Killers’ new album are all much more personal than Flowers has been before. And this new track, so far, seems like the most personal one.
